MUST HAVES: NEW YORK FASHION WEEK SURVIVAL KIT
Believe it or not, attending the New York shows as a stylist or editor isn’t just about making nice with street style photographers! As lovely as the shows are, it’s also about eating meals on the run, hobbling around in five-inch platforms, praying that you can get from the tents to Milk studios in 15 minutes, going hundreds of dollars over your cab budget, balancing your show schedule with office deadlines, navigating the party circuit, and trying to get work done while looking Sartorialist-ready. Here, our must haves for surviving the gruelling schedule and style wars…at least until Milan! Read the rest of this entry »

CAMEL COUTURE
Camel toppers are everywhere for Fall 2010: think 3.1 Philip Lim, Chloé and Michael Kors. But thankfully you don’t have to spend too much to add this trend to your wardrobe. While we’ve been drooling over this Michael Kors canvas and fur coat, we’re thinking this camel cape courtesy of Edit by Jeanne Beker, a new line launched this fall at The Bay, will be the perfect addition to our outwear wardrobe without breaking the bank. For good sartorial measure, we also scouted these wedge boots from the Gap, this Danier cross-body bag, and an Old Navy blazer, as other ways to add this hue into your everyday look.

WARHOL & FRIENDS
BoobyBall 2010 gets fashionable with Halston, Jagger
and Minnelli
In order to bring the upcoming Booby Ball fundraiser the right sartorial feel, the team behind the October 16th event, happening this year at Toronto’s Kool Haus, recently leaned on some of the cities best photographers, as well as friends, to volunteer their time and recreate the vibe of Steve Rubell and Ian Schrager’s legendary New York City night club, Studio 54. “The energy on set was just right,” said lensman Jalani Morgan. “It didn’t feel like a set, it felt like a party and that is what created a nice sense of authenticity for me—it was great!” Read the rest of this entry »

DESIGNER ON THE RISE: CAROL MARIE’S WORLDLY DESIRES
Sometimes, the best way to launch a successful fashion company is the more roundabout way. Jennifer Carol Kramer and Heather Marie White met while working as assistants at W magazine in 2006, and their friendship and mutual love of costume jewelry remained strong over the years and through various job changes.
The decision to start a jewelry line was spontaneous rather than calculated, explains White. “It was a very natural progression—from designing pieces for ourselves, to [making] custom pieces for magazines. At that point we decided to move forward with the idea of creating our first collection and officially filed the paperwork to form our company.” Read the rest of this entry »

DESIGNER ON THE RISE: FORTNIGHT LINGERIE
A FEVER FOR FORTNIGHT
Underpinnings have evolved over time and if Toronto-based Fortnight Lingerie has any say, they too will be part of this evolution. With a current collection of retro styles that echo a more elegant and glamorous era, its become a quick favourite for stylish insiders like Alexa Chung, who was recently spotted purchasing the Greta set while in Toronto at The Drake General Store (82A Bathurst St.).
Christina Remenyi designer and founder of Fortnight Lingerie studied fashion at Ryerson and rather than going into the realm of ready-to-wear, she fell into lingerie design after finding that many of her projects were geared towards lacy unmentionables. It wasn’t until taking a course in custom lingerie making that she realized this was the direction she would go. “There’s a need in the market for a wide range of sizes and I thought that would be a great way to angle my brand,” she says.
