Mercedes Benz Start Up Spring 2012
Announced last spring, the Mercedes Benz Start Up competition has been quietly taking place since, and last night was the culmination of months of hard work for five Canadian up-and-comers. Labels Unttld, Triarchy, Cassie Dee, Travis Taddeo and Martin Lim, presented looks from their Spring 2012 collection in front of a packed house and judging panel that consisted of Joanne Caza from Mercedes Benz, IMG’s Jarred Clark, Robert Ott, the chair of the School of Fashion at Ryerson, Bustle co-founder Shawn Hewson, Robin Kay of the FDCC and Fashion Magazine’s editor Bernadette Mora, with guest celebrity judge, model Jessica Stam.
Taking top prize was design duo Danielle Martin and Pao Lim of Martin Lim with their rich cream, blue and pink palette on flowy tops and dresses, finished with a black edging for a chic and graphic appeal. Having worked internationally at Christian Lacroix and Roland Mouret tailoring was clearly tantamount to the design duo, who have been designing together since June of last year and were inspired by a trip to Europe and, as they said in their opening video, “the jointness of travel.”
FRM was also impressed with Montreal labels Unttld (our fave, a comfy, floor length, white wrap-dress with asymmetrical seaming) and Travis Taddeo (whose feathered dress, skirt and vest were, in his words, a marriage between street wear and luxury).
Aside from a monetary prize Martin Lim will be showing their Fall 2012 collection at LG Fashion Week next spring, also to be held at David Pecaut Square, which has been confirmed as the new venue for the next few seasons.
