We get a sneak peek at Ashley Rowe’s Spring 2011 collection.
What inspires a designer most? Anything from art, music, models, television or an era in history could act as a muse to fashion designers. And after chatting with the Toronto-based Ashley Rowe in her Queen West studio recently, we couldn’t get over how much fun the young designer seems to be having. First came her Fall 2010 splatter collection, which caused quite a frenzy, where she splattered t-shirts, jackets, dresses and more and individually baked them to ensure the paint adhered to the fabric. Now, with her upcoming Spring 2011 collection, she’s added her own, artful spin to tye-die. So what influenced such an act of sartorial whimsy? “I saw this painting by Thrush Holmes,” said Rowe. “It’s called ‘Hippie.’ He uses these really beautiful pastel colours, and it really inspired me. I’ve done colour in the past, but I’ve never done a full collection of colour before.”

Toronto’s own Tommy Ton will be feted this evening at Holt Renfrew on Bloor as an exclusive selection of the style bloggers photo’s will be on display at the high end department store until August 30th.
Also, in Holt Renfrew news, Rag & Bone designers David Neville and Marcus Wainwright will be making a personal appearance on August 28th to showcase their Fall 2010 collection.
The gorgeously dark trailer for the highly anticipated flick Black Swan, with costumes by Rodarte, has just been released. The film, starring Natalie Portman, Mila Kunis and Vincent Cassel and directed by Darren Aronofsky, is also heading to the Toronto International Film Festival in a few weeks.
Hardly Magazine, the Toronto-based online teen mag (think more Sassy than Seventeen) is now online, and looking quite fabulous indeed. Tell all the teens and tweens in your life!

To up the affordable style anti, The Bay’s Bonnie Brooks commissioned Mimran Group (think Saul, older brother to Joe ‘Fresh’ Mimran) last fall to create an affordable line of women’s basics, sold exclusively at Canada’s oldest retailer. Now we have Moon Apparel, which also sees Saul’s children Tamara and Jordin behind the reigns, to contend with the contemporary chic and high-end labels the department store has coveted since Brooks took over a few years ago.
