Mercedes-Benz Start Up 2012
An ongoing initiative to support Canadian designers, the Mercedes-Benz Start Up awarded Martin Lim with the honour during last season’s WMCFW.
This year, the finalists included Caitlin Power (Toronto), Christopher Bates (Toronto), Dreamboat Lucy (Prince Edward Island), DUY (Montreal), Lauren Bagliore (Calgary), Malorie Urbanovitch (Edmonton), Nicole Campre (Edmonton) and Pure Magnolia (Vancouver).
While each designer was credited with an astounding presentation, the panel of judges, including Barbara Atkin (Holt Renfrew), Bernadette Morra (Fashion Magazine), Jarrad Clark (IMG), Jeanne Beker (Fashion Television), Joanne Caza (Mercedes-Benz) and Robin Kay (FDCC), announced the final winner.
Taking home the national accreditation was Montreal native Duy Nguyen’s line DUY, featuring a Spring collection that takes the wearer all the way to the French Riviere of the ’80s.
Tailoring, cut and precision are the trademarks of DUY and this collection was no exception. With a sharp, yet contrasting colour scheme, the looks were different yet complemented each other creating the perfect summer wardrobe.
FRM was also impressed with Prince Edward Island duo Louanna and Hilary Murphy’s line Dreamboat Lucy. With a nod to the sandy cliffs of the maritime island (even including the perfect red-orange of the PEI sand), the looks were eye-catching and interesting in colour combinations.
